Connecticut Sun Snap Mercury’s Long Winning Streak

Welcome to the Basketball Hangover. Here’s what’s going on in the WNBA.

I had mentioned that the Connecticut Sun haven’t looked great against top teams. I feel that beating the Phoenix Mercury on Monday is a good start for them. The Mercury are below a tier from the top shelf but they’ve played like worldbeaters as of late. The Sun just stopped a 6-game winning streak Phoenix had.

And it’s ironic enough that DeWanna Bonner, the player the Merc traded away in the offseason, gave them a hell of a game. She scored 25 points and she started a 10-0 run in the third quarter with consecutive shots from behind the arc. That gave Connecticut momentum for the rest of the night as they won going away. Alyssa Thomas of the two torn labrums nearly had a trip-dub at 22-9-9.

That brings the Sun to a .500 record and that clinched them a postseason berth. As it stands, they’re facing the Chicago Sky but some things might change as the season ends on Sunday. The Phoenix Mercury are in the 5th slot for now. The Merc didn’t shoot well, making only 35 percent of their shots.

But they get to do this all over again on Wednesday. Not sure if we’ll know any better from these two teams after THAT particular game. But any sort of momentum going into the postseason would be good.

Bullet Passes

As of now, both the Atlanta Dream and the Indiana Fever are both 5-14 and still have a shot at the postseason. The Washington Mystics are above them at 5-13. But too many things have to happen to get there. The Dallas Wings are 7-12 and are in the driver’s seat for that last playoff berth.

The Sparks are 14-5 and the Lynx are 13-6. Either team still has a shot at the double bye to the semis. The Storm are 16-3 and the Aces are 14-4.

By the way, the Storm have been winning so much. They have a 5-game win streak as of now.

Only 6 days left and there have been no signs of Sabrina Ionescu getting cleared. She was supposed to be out a month and she got hurt on July 31st.

Get to that spot, DeWanna. Beat it before the buzzer sounds.

Just that one game on Monday. Please stay safe in the Wubble.
