Te’a Cooper’s Career-High Boosts Sparks Over Mystics

Welcome to the Basketball Hangover. I write about what’s happening in the WNBA daily as we try to heal from this pandemic.

The Sparks have been very up and down this season. Against the Washington Mystics, they were up.

Te’a Cooper scored 26 points as the Sparks stopped the Mystics’ three-game winning streak.

At the end, it was about defense. Cooper stole a Mystics attempted handoff to put the Sparks up four with under 90 seconds left. And when the Mystics attempted to tie the game, Amanda Zahui B blocked a three-pointer by Tina Charles. The Sparks would put away the game with foul shots thereafter.

As mentioned, Cooper had a career-high with 26. Amanda Zahui B scored 17, defensive wiz Brittney Sykes went for 14 points, and on-and-off Sparks member Karlie Samuelson also had a career-high with 13 points.

On the losing side, Leilani Mitchell led the Mystics with 26 points. Charles, who leads the league in scoring, added 25 points and 10 boards.

The Sparks had previously lost 4 of 5 games and the Mystics had won 5 of 6. As you’ve probably heard everywhere else in sports and in life, in any given moment…

Bullet Passes

The Dallas Wings held the Indiana Fever to 24 points in the first half as they used a balanced attack (6 ladies scored in double figures) to beat Indy in a blowout.

I continue to be sad for the Fever, who are now 1-15. There’s no doubt about the talent of that team but they just can’t seem to put it all together.

And the Chicago Sky have completely nullified that 7-game losing streak with a 7-game win streak. They blasted the Liberty with a 37-point second quarter. And with that win streak, the Sky are suddenly 4th in the standings.

Yeah, this Brittney Sykes pack was MEAN.

That definitely helped spur the Sparks to a win.

Everyone, please take care of yourselves during this pandemic. And that goes for everyone involved with the WNBA as well.
