Sabrina Ionescu Gets 9th Triple-Double in WNBA History

Welcome to the Basketball Hangover. I write about what’s happening in the WNBA daily as we try to heal from this pandemic.

In her first game this season, it was pretty likely that Sabrina Ionescu wasn’t going to get a triple-double when she was 4 rebounds away from it. However, she did give us something else to remember by and it was sweet.

Against the Lynx, Sabrina got it done. 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 assists. We shouldn’t be surprised as she holds the NCAA record for most career triple-doubles with 26 (men and women, by the way).

The thing is a triple-double is very rare in the WNBA. Check this out.

Yes. Before Sabrina, a triple-double has only happened 8 TIMES in league history. And remember that we’re in Year 25 of the WNBA.

Also, Sheryl Swoopes has the ONLY triple-double in WNBA Playoff history.

As you can also see, no lady has multiple career triple-doubles. There was a moment last season where Candace Parker had a chance to go for her second triple-double but she never got to return to a game that turned into a blowout.

Well, we all feel like Sabrina is going to be the first woman to do it. Again, she is the queen of the triple-doubles. It might just be a matter of time.

Do remember, though, that the WNBA only has 40 minutes. And the game is a lot slower than the men’s game. If you guys are looking for meticulous post and half court play, the WNBA is the league for you. So it’s harder to accumulate stats in the WNBA.

Also, of note, and really, more important to Sabrina and the New York Liberty, New York is 3-0. We certainly didn’t see that coming.

Bullet Passes

And immediately, the Las Vegas Aces look scary. They turned things around on Seattle and blew them out. The Aces pounced on the Storm early. You knew Seattle was going to make a run but Las Vegas started the fourth quarter with an 8-0 run.

I never said the Aces were a bad pick to win a championship but, man, did they prove a point here.

Good to see Tina Charles do her thing with the Mystics. She finished with 22 points and 12 boards. But Phoenix was too much for the District.

Man, it was NOT a good day of basketball in terms of having close games. Both NBA play-in games and all the WNBA games had double digit margins.

You know I enjoy a good no-look pass. Chelsea Gray gives a tasty dish to Dearica Hamby.

That’s why she is the WNBA’s Point God.

Everyone, please take care of yourselves during this pandemic. And that goes for everyone involved with the WNBA as well.
