Washington Mystics Control Their Own Playoff Destiny

Welcome to the Basketball Hangover. Here’s what’s going on in the WNBA.

The Washington Mystics completed one of two tasks on their way to a playoff spot. The New York Liberty didn’t stand a chance against D.C. as the Mystics limited them to only 11 points in the third. Anyway, the first task for D.C. was win on Saturday. Now they just have to win on Sunday to make the playoffs.

They are actually in control of their own destiny. At 8-13, they are a game ahead of the Dallas Wings, who were idle. The Atlanta Dream, who were in the mix, have been officially eliminated from contention.

Myisha Hines-Allen continues to lead Washington as she scored 25 points and grabbed 11 boards. Kiah Stokes and Kia Nurse had 15 points each but they nearly weren’t enough to challenge Washington.

The Liberty play the Wings early Sunday afternoon. They would have to win this game to have a chance. Then they would have to root for the Dream to defeat the Mystics later on in the night.

Again, what a rollercoaster trip the Mystics have been on. They started out the season at 3-0 before reality came crashing down as they lost 12 of 13 games. They’ve won 4 of 5 games since and credit to the Mystics for not giving up.

Last day of the regular season coming up!

The Aces have now clinched a double bye to the semifinals with a huge win over the Sparks. Las Vegas led in double figures early and while the Sparks made a rally at the end of the third, L.A. was limited to 10 points in the final quarter. Whoops.

This game had no meaning in the playoff picture as the Minnesota Lynx were locked into the 4th spot while Indiana Fever were already out of contention. But Rachel Banham scored a career-best 29 points and 10 assists. It did snap a three-game skid for the Lynx so at least, they’ll have some sort of momentum going into the second round game.
