Sparks and Wings Win First Overtime Games in the Wubble

Welcome to the Basketball Hangover. Let’s take a look at how the ladies in the WNBA are doing!

We’re halfway through the season now. 72 games have been played in 27 days in the Wubble. And none of them went to overtime.

Well, Day 28 and Games 73 and 74 gave us free basketball.

First off, it looked like the Atlanta Dream was going to upset the Los Angeles Sparks. Courtney Williams made a jumper to put the Dream up, 81-79, with 3.7 seconds left.

Unfortunately, for the Dream, Candace Parker slithered her way to the hoop and scored the lay-up to send the game to overtime. Then in OT, Chelsea Gray took over as she scored 10 of her 20 points in the extra period. The Sparks escaped from the Dream, who have now lost 10 straight.

I suppose you can take this as a moral victory for the ATL. They’ve played better the last two games after suffering blowout after blowout. But the Sparks continue to win. After alternating wins and losses their first 6 games, they’ve won 6 in a row. I already mentioned that we shouldn’t forget about the Sparks.

As for the other overtime game, the Dallas Wings actually led by 23 points against the Washington Mystics in the third quarter. But Myisha Hines-Allen became a house on fire as she scored 17 points in the third alone. We all remember what she did in the opener. Hines-Allen would eventually help D.C. tie the game and send the game to overtime.

But the Mystics didn’t have another gear as the WIngs as Tyasha Harris spearheaded a 10-1 run to start overtime. Myisha Hines-Allen’s 35 POINTS and 12 rebounds were not enough.

I continue to be sad for the Mystics, who have lost 8 of 9 after that 3-0 start. Meanwhile, we have Dallas tied with Connecticut at 5-8 for the 8th spot. It’d be nice for them to make the postseason.

But finally, overtime in the Wubble. I can’t believe we’re over halfway through the regular season.

Bullet Passes

The veteran, Glory Johnson, had her season-high with the Dream at 23 points. She was one of two players that tested positive for COVID after they got inside the bubble but she’s played 11 games for the Dream this season so she’s doing just fine. The other player is her teammate, Kalani Brown. She saw her first action on August 10th after she recovered but she’s barely gotten any PT in her last three games.

Meanwhile, those Minnesota Lynx are friggin’ resilient. They ran off 12 straight before the half ended and held off the veteran Mercury team to go to 9-3. Napheesa Collier has been awesome and Crystal Dangerfield is the leading candidate for WNBA Rookie of the Year. Brittney Griner did not play due to personal reasons.

This is why Diana Taurasi is the GOAT.

Just badass.

Also, isn’t it weird to see your game referees outside of the game? I never thought about that kind of interaction.

Double U Scoreboard

LA 93 (9-3) v ATL 85 (2-11) (OT)
WAS 92 (4-8) v DAL 101 (5-8) (OT)
MIN 90 (9-3) v PHX 80 (6-7)

Watch This Play

As mentioned earlier, Courtney Williams would give the Dream a two-point lead in the closing seconds but Candace Parker (I mean, the defense wasn’t great but whatever) was able to send the game to overtime with that lay-up.

And the Sparks would go on to win in OT.

Take care of yourselves, people in the Wubble.
