The NBA Has Resumed Their Season

Welcome to the Basketball Hangover. We jot down NBA and WNBA stuff mostly from last night that we want to talk about. Check it out.

The NBA returned and LeBron James did his usual thing.

So, uh, the NBA is back.

Spare me your “BASKETBALL IS BACK” shouts, though. Basketball has BEEN back; the WNBA has been playing since last Saturday. But it is good to have the NBA back, if only that we have more new entertainment to watch. And for the athletes? While it’s a risk, it’s a nice distraction from all the wrong that has been going on in this world whether it’s a seemingly unbeatable disease to the never-ending fight for justice.

Two close games were played in the return of the National Basketball Association on Thursday. While it was a bit mysterious that Zion Williamson only played 15 minutes for the Pelicans, any Zion is better than no Zion.

There were huge twists of irony in that Jazz/Pelicans game. Rudy Gobert, whose positive test was the reason why the NBA season was suspended, scored the first points of the restart. Gobert was also the man who made the game-winning free throws after receiving a pass from Donovan Mitchell, who also tested positive the day of the suspension and had a well-documented rift with Gobert because of that.

In the meantime, we had the battle of L.A. in the second game. It was the Clippers against the Lakers and it was not a pretty game (hell, it could be seen as a game with playoff intensity). LeBron James, even in Year 17, proved he can still be the best in any given sequence. He followed up his own miss and made the go-ahead bucket. And then he locked up both Kawhi Leonard and THEN Paul George to seal the Lakers win.

You can make the case that the NBA had a triumphant return. Now let’s see if they can keep this up until October.

Bullet Passes

The WNBA hasn’t stopped, though! The Washington Mystics continue their surprising title defense as they easily turned the Seattle Storm into a light drizzle. Game 1 had Myisha Hines-Allen turn in a career performance. Game 2 had Aerial Powers lighting it up (more on Aerial later). And this game? Ariel Atkins had 22 points and was just killing it from the outside.

How scary are they?

The Sky suffered their first loss of the season as they fell short against the Lynx. Allie Quigley once again sank a clutch three after having a not-so-great shooting performance but Courtney Vandersloot had two shots at the rim and missed them both. The Lynx held on for the win.

While that DeWanna Bonner (34 points, 10 boards) and Alyssa Thomas (10-18-8!) tandem is really scary, the Sun still haven’t won a game. The Sparks bounced back nicely after their loss to Chicago.

Brandon Ingram reminded us of his improved season as he showed his offensive prowess against the Jazz. Too bad, the season awards for this year are already over as they’re only going to look at the performances from the start to March 11th. Ingram’s potential game-winner also went In-N-Out burger. Whoops.

So let’s take a look at this exchange.

Andre Iguodala of the Miami Heat was watching a WNBA game a couple of nights ago. #23 of the Mystics happened to be Aerial Powers.

Powers was understandably miffed. Women’s sports have been overlooked for too long. Women in general have been overlooked for too long. So Aerial had a response to this.

While you can take five seconds to search the Google machine and look up Powers’ name, I can also understand that this was an honest mistake where he just tweeted without having to search. That’s fine. But…

Andre doubled down on this. A simple apology would’ve sufficed but now this is just plain disrespectful. It’s either Andre didn’t like being told by a woman about this. Aerial reiterated:

I don’t think I have to say anything else. Give the women the respect that they deserve. Say their names. I still don’t know everyone from the WNBA but when I tweet about their games, I make sure to look up their names before I tweet about it.

Father Time is trying to get to LeBron but Bron is just doing a great job holding it off. Geez.
