The Hangover: Bulls Spoil Tyronn Lue’s Cavs Coaching Debut; Kings Win 5th Straight

This is the Hangover. We get basketball-wasted all the time. Yes, we recap the NBA every night in our own way.

Eight games on a Saturday night. Including a coaching debut!

THE GAMES

NEW YORK KNICKS 84 (22-24) @ CHARLOTTE HORNETS 97 (21-23)

A big third quarter by the Hornets was the culprit for the Knicks’ failings in this game. NYC couldn’t stop the hot Kemba Walker and I think they remember that insanity that happened about four years ago, right? I can’t seem to think of that name.

BEHIND THE LINES
Kemba Walker (CHA): 26 pts, 6 rebs, 5 assts.
Jeremy Lin (CHA): 26 pts, 5 rebs, 5 assts.
P.J. Hairston (CHA): 20 pts, 10 rebs.
Derrick Williams (NY): 19 pts, 14 rebs.

MILWAUKEE BUCKS 99 (19-27) @ NEW ORLEANS PELICANS 116 (16-27)

The Pelicans had a rush at the end of the third. And then they smashed the Bucks with three-pointers in the fourth (four different players made a three each in a stretch).

BEHIND THE LINES
Anthony Davis (NO): 22 pts, 7 rebs, 5 assts, 4 blks.
Ryan Anderson (NO): 23 pts, 6 rebs.
Khris Middleton (MIL): 22 pts, 7 rebs, 5 assts.
Greg Monroe (MIL): 22 pts, 11 rebs.

MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES 101 (25-20) @ MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES 106 (14-31)

The Grizzlies came back from a 16-point deficit and were able to tie the game. After Ricky Rubio split his foul shots, the Grizz were called for five seconds. Don’t you hate it when you lose a game by something like THAT? Rubio and Andrew Wiggins padded the lead with foul shots to finish it off.

BEHIND THE LINES
Shabazz Muhammad (MIN): 25 pts.
Ricky Rubio (MIN): 15 pts, 6 rebs, 12 assts, 3 stls.
Mario Chalmers (MEM): 19 pts, 5 assts.

CHICAGO BULLS 96 (25-18) @ CLEVELAND CAVALIERS 83 (30-12)

The Cavs looked out of sorts from the start. Which was really weird considering that it was Tyronn Lue‘s coaching debut. Pau Gasol and Jimmy Butler made up for Derrick Rose‘s bad shooting night and the Bulls came away with a win that probably infuriated their fans because they don’t do this game after game.

Great debut, Ty Lue.

BEHIND THE LINES
Jimmy Butler (CHI): 20 pts, 9 rebs.
Pau Gasol (CHI): 25 pts, 10 rebs, 6 assts.
LeBron James (CLE): 26 pts, 13 rebs, 9 assts.
J.R. Smith (CLE): 18 pts, 11 rebs.

ATLANTA HAWKS 95 (26-19) @ PHOENIX SUNS 98 (14-31)

This video describes Hawks/Suns best:

But in the end, it was Archie Goodwin making a three with 0.1 seconds left. Not great for the Hawks and for one night, the Suns were alive.

And Tyson Chandler was alive, too. Look at that rebound number!

BEHIND THE LINES
Alex Len (PHX): 16 pts, 12 rebs, 5 assts.
Tyson Chandler (PHX): 13 pts, 27 rebs, 5 assts.
Archie Goodwin (PHX): 24 pts.
Al Horford (ATL): 9 pts, 16 rebs, 5 assts.
Kent Bazemore (ATL): 21 pts, 6 rebs.

DETROIT PISTONS 101 (23-21) @ DENVER NUGGETS 104 (17-27)

It was a wild finish in Denver. After Danilo Gallinari‘s jumper took the lead, the Pistons missed a couple of lay-ups. Emmanuel Mudiay‘s fastbreak lay-up was blocked by Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Then Reggie Jackson‘s lay-up was blocked by Nikola Jokic. Anthony Tolliver was called for a clear path foul with no time remaining and the Nuggets take the duke.

BEHIND THE LINES
Danilo Gallinari (DEN): 30 pts, 6 rebs.
Aron Baynes (DET): 13 pts, 10 rebs.
Marcus Morris (DET): 20 pts.

LOS ANGELES LAKERS 103 (9-37) @ PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS 121 (20-26)

The Blazers backcourt was all over the hapless Lakers. This was Kobe Bryant‘s last visit to Portland as a Laker and Rip City made sure he never forgot it.

This Laker team is really bad. Just thought I would remind you.

BEHIND THE LINES
Damian Lillard (POR): 36 pts, 5 assts.
C.J. McCollum (POR): 28 pts.
D’Angelo Russell (LAL): 21 pts.

INDIANA PACERS 97 (23-21) @ SACRAMENTO KINGS 108 (20-23)

Paul George had a big night but DeMarcus Cousins had an even bigger night. He finished with a career-high 48 points against a helpless Pacers defense. Rajon Rondo also finished with a triple-double, his sixth of the season. Oh, yeah. The Kings have won five straight.

BEHIND THE LINES
DeMarcus Cousins (SAC): 48 pts, 13 rebs.
Rajon Rondo (SAC): 11 pts, 10 rebs, 10 assts.
Jordan Hill (IND): 17 pts, 13 rebs.
Paul George (IND): 34 pts.

THE TAKEAWAY

Kobe Bryant was supposedly really mad at the Laker team after the loss. It took him this long?

Tyronn Lue should be axed by the Cavs. I hear David Blatt is available.

It’s a bit concerning, though, that the Cavs didn’t come out with fire. I mean, a coaching change usually fires up a team and it didn’t do that for the Cavs. We’ll see where this goes next.

Tyson Chandler had 27 boards last night. Most by a player this season? Andre Drummond had 29 rebounds in a November game.

Here’s the reason why the Kings won and why Cousins had a career-high.

It was a CORGI TAKEOVER.
