Sparks Media Day Lookback

(Cameron Brink and Azura Stevens enjoying Media Day. I think.)

I’m writing this on May 24, 2025. The WNBA season is well underway (as of this day, the Sparks are 1-3 but we’ll catch up to all of that later) and I’m aware that I’m behind on what I’ve wanted to do this season and make The No-Look Pass a running diary of my third year covering the Sparks. I’ll do my best to catch up on what is supposed to be supplemental coverage of the Sparks but more on a personal touch.

Sparks Media Day happened at Staples Center (I just cannot call it Crypto.com Arena; I mean, it’s CRYPTO). In my first two years covering the Sparks, they had Media Day take place at the cold gymnasium of El Camino College. So this is definitely a step up.

The team was actually having practice on the floor. I personally wouldn’t want to do a Media Day after a hard practice like that. But that’s how it works.

ACTION ACTION WE WANT ACTION!

I’m no fashion plate but I wore a Britney tee to Media Day.

(My loneliness is killing me.)

Sparks General Manager Raegan Pebley and coach Lynne Roberts met some of us media as practice was coming to a close. Raegan then saw my shirt and said that she once dressed up as Britney for Halloween. I joked that we may have some blackmail material in our hands.

I had already talked to many of the players during training camp (Rickea Jackson, Rae Burrell, Odyssey Sims, and Mercedes Russell). So this was more about getting quotes about camp. But Cameron Brink wasn’t one I got to talk to often. I asked about her mental health as she continues to do her long rehab from injury.

Rehab can be a long road. What does Cameron Brink do to de-stress?

I hope she can come back real soon.

As for Rickea? Some people know how our relationship is. And of course, I just had to ask about breakfast.

Before I go home, hereโ€™s my question to Rickea Jackson. You already know.

Our breakfast thing goes back to the end of last season when she revealed she had stuffed French toast after a game. It’s been a running gag for us since.

Media Day felt a lot faster than usual because once a pair of players were done talking, we would move on to the next pair/group almost immediately. The session would end with Sarah Ashlee Barker and Rae Burrell, who were laughing quite a bit.

As always, we would have a good feeling about the team coming out of Media Day. But as a certain Phoenix Mercury player said last year, “Reality is coming.”

Rey-Rey is all over social media. Heโ€™s on ThreadsBluesky, and the vomit-inducing Twitter (I refuse to call it with a certain single letter). In the past, he covered the NBA and the Lakers. Now heโ€™s in his third season as a Sparks beat writer for the Sporting Tribune.
