Jackie Young Scores Career High in Aces Win Over Mercury

Welcome to the Basketball Hangover. I write about what’s happening in the WNBA daily as we try to heal from this pandemic.

The Aces were able to go back above .500 after taking care of biz against the Phoenix Mercury. Jackie Young scored 27 points in the win to counter Brittney Griner‘s own 27.

Diana Taurasi will be without the Mercury for the next month or so with that sternum fracture. Still, they were able to keep up with Vegas for most of the game. They even led, 77-74, late in the game. But that lead went back to the Aces after Dearica Hamby scored a couple of lay-ups; the latter put Vegas back up for good. An offensive foul by Griner did the Mercury late. Skylar Diggins-Smith would foul Riquna Williams when she was shooting a three and the free throws would seal the Mercury’s fate.

The Mercury should still be okay; if Taurasi misses the entire month of June, that’ll be 10 games missed. That’s roughly a third of the season. Then Taurasi (along with a few other WNBA stars) will be in the Olympics in July as the season itself takes a break.

Meanwhile, the Aces are missing Kelsey Plum due to the 3-on-3 Olympic qualifying tourney. But Jackie Young is looking to be one of the most improved players this season. They also got Chelsea Gray and Riquna Williams through free agency and remember that they didn’t have Liz Cambage last season. Las Vegas is gonna be okay.

Everyone, please take care of yourselves during this pandemic. And that goes for everyone involved with the WNBA as well.
