Here’s some WNBA stuff!

It was a huge day on Friday for the WNBA when Renee Montgomery, who had just retired on the 9th of this month, surprised everybody by being part of an investor group that bought the Atlanta Dream. Well, maybe surprised shouldn’t be the word but that definitely came out of left field. Montgomery opted out of the Wubble last summer to focus on social justice before outright retiring.
Former Georgia Senator Kelly Loeffler had a share on the team before it was sold to a group that consisted of real estate investor Larry Gottesdiener, Suzanne Abair (President of Northland Investment Corp.), and Montgomery. Loeffler was not happy about the WNBA‘s focus on social justice last summer. The players in the Wubble then wore shirts that said Vote Warnock, in reference to Raphael Warnock, who was Loeffler’s opponent in the senate runoffs earlier in the year. Warnock would go on to oust Loeffler.
I think it’s pretty badass that Montgomery, who was one of the more vocal leaders in social justice as well as an Atlanta Dream member in the last two seasons of her career, was part of the group that bought the team from Loeffler. That is definitely satisfying and it felt like, in a way, justice was served. There is no room for Loeffler’s mindset anywhere, really, and we’re all glad she’s no longer part of the team and the league.
Montgomery will also be an executive of the team. She is the first former WNBA player to be both an owner AND an executive of a WNBA team. I’m looking forward to the next chapter for the Atlanta Dream.
And if you must know about additional credentials, Renee Montgomery won WNBA titles with the Minnesota Lynx in 2015 and 2017. She became an all-star while playing with the Connecticut Sun in 2011 and won the 6th Woman of the Year the following season.
Everyone, please take care of yourselves during this pandemic. And that goes for everyone involved with the NBA as well.
