This isn’t a shocker. Steve Kerr won the Coach of the Year honors after leading the Golden State Warriors to a record 73 wins this season. There is absolutely no way you can ignore that feat even if a lot of coaches did a remarkable job with their teams this season.
But check out the voting breakdown (thanks to Marc Spears of ESPN):

I do think it’s silly that Luke Walton got votes in the award. Luke Walton led the Warriors to a 39-4 record before Kerr came back to coach (went 34-5 the rest of the way). So why not make them co-winners? Or why not make it so only one coach out of the team gets votes? It’s just a little weird to me.
Terry Stotts managed to guide his Blazers to the postseason, even though most people picked them to be one of the worst teams in the league. Gregg Popovich is basically regarded as the best coach in the NBA. Steve Clifford and Dwane Casey should get props for getting their teams a lot more wins than was expected.
I’m fine with Kerr winning as 73-9 is too big to not acknowledge. But you can’t help but also notice Luke Walton in the background. Nonetheless, congrats to Steve Kerr for the award.
