The Hangover: Angry Damian Lillard Explodes All Over Warriors

This is the Hangover. We get basketball-wasted all the time. Yes, we recap the NBA every night in our own way.

Well, the NBA is in full swing. FOURTEEN games happened on Friday.

THE GAMES

DALLAS MAVERICKS 104 (29-27) @ ORLANDO MAGIC 110 (24-29) (OT)

This was a weird game. Both teams found themselves on both ends of the spectrum; the Mavs were down 21 in the first quarter before they came back to lead the Magic by 13 in the third. So it was fitting that they went to overtime after a lay-up by Evan Fournier, which I URGE YOU to google.

A Victor Oladipo three would break the tie in the extra period. This was the start of a quick 7-0 run for the Magic and they ended up getting the win against a very game Mavericks team.

BEHIND THE LINES
Nikola Vucevic (ORL): 21 pts, 12 rebs.
Victor Oladipo (ORL): 17 pts, 14 rebs.
Aaron Gordon (ORL): 7 pts, 11 rebs, 6 stls.
Chandler Parsons (DAL): 24 pts, 3 blks.
Deron Williams (DAL): 25 pts, 7 assts.
Zaza Pachulia (DAL): 11 pts, 19 rebs, 3 stls.

DETROIT PISTONS 86 (27-28) @ WASHINGTON WIZARDS 98 (25-28)

The Pistons looked rusty from the start and the Wizards (because of rescheduling, they are playing the second of a back-to-back-to-back!) led the game wire-to-wire. The good news for the Pistons? Their new acquisition, Tobias Harris, played very well. So silver linings playbook and stuff.

BEHIND THE LINES
John Wall (WAS): 22 pts, 8 rebs, 8 assts.
Tobias Harris (DET): 21 pts.
Andre Drummond (DET): 11 pts, 13 rebs.

NEW YORK KNICKS 98 (23-33) @ BROOKLYN NETS 109 (15-40)

The Nets went on a decisive 15-2 run to put away their crosstown rivals. I mean, if you can call them crosstown rivals. But Brooklyn played a cleaner game as they only turned the ball over seven times. The Knicks had 16 giveaways.

You know, I’m not sure if Derek Fisher was the real problem. But Kurt Rambis ain’t exactly helping right now.

BEHIND THE LINES
Donald Sloan (BRK): 14 pts, 10 rebs.
Brook Lopez (BRK): 33 pts, 8 rebs, 4 blks.
Carmelo Anthony (NY): 22 pts, 7 rebs, 6 assts, 3 stls.

MIAMI HEAT 115 (30-24) @ ATLANTA HAWKS 111 (31-25)

The undermanned Heat trailed going into the fourth quarter, where they took over. Josh McRoberts played an awesome all-around game while Luol Deng made big buckets when they needed them. Deng’s three broke a 98-tie then a late jumper gave the Heat an 8-point lead. The Heat would hold on to win.

BEHIND THE LINES
Luol Deng (MIA): 30 pts, 11 rebs, 4 stls.
Goran Dragic (MIA): 17 pts, 5 rebs, 10 assts, 4 stls.
Josh McRoberts (MIA): 19 pts, 6 rebs, 10 assts.
Jeff Teague (ATL): 23 pts, 7 assts.
Paul Millsap (ATL): 12 pts, 13 rebs.

TORONTO RAPTORS 106 (35-18) @ CHICAGO BULLS 116 (28-26)

The Raps got off to a good start but it was a huge third quarter by the Bulls and Doug McDermott that led to a surprise Chicago win. McDermott would go 13 for 17 and 30 points to replace Jimmy Butler‘s production. The NBA is weird.

BEHIND THE LINES
Pau Gasol (CHI): 18 pts, 11 rebs, 9 assts.
Doug McDermott (CHI): 30 pts.
Derrick Rose (CHI): 26 pts, 6 assts.
DeMar DeRozan (TOR): 22 pts.
Jonas Valanciunas (TOR): 25 pts, 12 rebs.
Kyle Lowry (TOR): 27 pts, 8 assts.

MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES 104 (17-38) @ MEMPHIS GRIZZLIES 109 (32-22)

A full court shot by Vince Carter gave the Grizz some momentum going into the fourth quarter. Mario Chalmers‘ three then jump-started a 9-0 run that would give Memphis the lead. The game got too close for comfort before Carter came in and tipped a shot that made it a Grizz three-point lead. The bears would hold on for the win against the puppies.

BEHIND THE LINES
Mike Conley (MEM): 25 pts, 7 assts.
JaMychal Green (MEM): 9 pts, 11 rebs, 3 blks, 3 stls.
Karl-Anthony Towns (MIN): 11 pts, 15 rebs.
Gorgui Dieng (MIN): 14 pts, 12 rebs, 3 stls.
Andrew Wiggins (MIN): 20 pts, 5 assts.
Zach LaVine (MIN): 22 pts.

PHILADELPHIA 76ERS 114 (8-46) @ NEW ORLEANS PELICANS 121 (21-33)

The Pelicans got big offfensive games from Anthony Davis, Ryan Anderson, and Jrue Holiday. Anderson made a three to put the birds up eight late and it’s another night, another loss for the Sixers. So what else is new, right?

BEHIND THE LINES
Anthony Davis (NO): 34 pts, 7 rebs.
Ryan Anderson (NO): 26 pts.
Jrue Holiday (NO): 24 pts, 12 assts, 4 stls.
Nerlens Noel (PHI): 24 pts, 9 rebs.

INDIANA PACERS 101 (29-25) @ OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER 98 (40-15)

The Thunder had an eight-point lead late before the Pacers stormed back. A Myles Turner corner three tied it. Then with 18.8 seconds left, Monta Ellis made a three to give Indy the lead. After a bit of the foul game, the Thunder had one last chance to tie the game but Russell Westbrook‘s three wasn’t even close.

BEHIND THE LINES
Monta Ellis (IND): 27 pts, 3 stls.
Ian Mahinmi (IND): 19 pts, 11 rebs.
Paul George (IND): 22 pts, 5 rebs, 10 assts.
George Hill (IND): 9 pts, 11 rebs, 9 assts.
Myles Turner (IND): 16 pts, 5 rebs, 6 blks.
Enes Kanter (OKC): 13 pts, 10 rebs.
Russell Westbrook (OKC): 23 pts, 18 assts.
Serge Ibaka (OKC): 12 pts, 11 rebs.
Kevin Durant (OKC): 31 pts, 8 rebs.

CHARLOTTE HORNETS 98 (28-26) @ MILWAUKEE BUCKS 95 (22-33)

The two teams were locked into a close one. Khris Middleton had a chance to tie the game with 45 seconds left but he missed one out of his three free throws. Marvin Williams would capitalize at the other end to give the Hornets a three-point lead. The Bucks had one last shot but Khris missed his three that would’ve tied it.

You can say that the deer were fed to the Hornets for a little… Buzzfeed. I’m so sorry.

BEHIND THE LINES
Kemba Walker (CHA): 25 pts, 6 rebs.
Cody Zeller (CHA): 23 pts, 9 rebs.
Khris Middleton (MIL): 20 pts, 7 assts.
Giannis Antetokounmpo (MIL): 18 pts, 11 rebs.
Jabari Parker (MIL): 23 pts, 11 rebs.

HOUSTON ROCKETS 116 (28-28) @ PHOENIX SUNS 100 (14-41)

I mean, geez. As much as the Rockets are full of turmoil right now, they can’t be as bad as the Suns.

BEHIND THE LINES
James Harden (HOU): 27 pts, 10 rebs, 7 assts.
Trevor Ariza (HOU): 25 pts, 6 rebs, 5 stls.
Mirza Teletovic (PHX): 25 pts, 8 rebs.
Kris Humphries (PHX): 18 pts, 12 rebs.

GOLDEN STATE WARRIORS 105 (48-5) @ PORTLAND TRAILBLAZERS 137 (28-27)

The Warriors are starting to remind me of the Rams of 2001. Yes, they are extraordinary on offense but they seem to get real careless when it comes to taking care of the ball and the defense just doesn’t seem to be there at times. This is one of those examples where turnovers cost them. You mix that with an angry-as-hell Damian Lillard and you got one of these disasters.

Speaking of which, here is Lillard’s shot chart:

BEHIND THE LINES
Damian Lillard (POR): 51 pts (9/12 3FG), 7 assts, 6 stls.
C.J. McCollum (POR): 21 pts, 7 assts.
Klay Thompson (GS): 23 pts.
Stephen Curry (GS): 31 pts, 5 assts.
Draymond Green (GS): 14 pts, 12 rebs, 8 assts, 9 TOs.

DENVER NUGGETS 110 (22-33) @ SACRAMENTO KINGS 116 (23-31)

Boogie had a huge game in Mike Malone‘s first visit to Sactown since getting dumped unceremoniously by the Kings. Despite the Kings turning the ball over 22 times, the Nuggets’ threat was pretty much like poking someone endlessly during a street fight. It was annoying as hell but the Kings were able to land the knockout punches.

BEHIND THE LINES
Rajon Rondo (SAC): 24 pts, 10 rebs, 9 assts, 5 stls.
Rudy Gay (SAC): 24 pts, 3 stls.
DeMarcus Cousins (SAC): 37 pts, 20 rebs, 4 blks.
Danilo Gallinari (DEN): 27 pts, 3 stls.
Joffrey Lauvergne (DEN): 22 pts, 7 rebs.

BOSTON CELTICS 93 (32-24) @ UTAH JAZZ 111 (27-27)

I thought this was going to be tough for Utah because they had to fly back from the nation’s capital to play at home in a back-to-back situation.

The Celtics were frozen (LET IT GO) and shot only 37 percent. And, of course, the Jazz worked the slowdown game to perfection. Lull them to boredom and then ATTACK.

BEHIND THE LINES
Gordon Hayward (UTA): 22 pts.
Rudy Gobert (UTA): 11 pts, 15 rebs, 4 blks.
Derrick Favors (UTA): 23 pts, 10 rebs, 6 assts, 3 blks.
Isaiah Thomas (BOS): 25 pts, 6 assts.

SAN ANTONIO SPURS 119 (46-9) @ LOS ANGELES LAKERS 113 (11-45)

(PHOTO CREDIT: Sean M. Haffey/Getty Images.)

The Lakers surprisingly never let the Spurs out of their sights. Kobe Bryant was making big shots while popping his fingers back into place. But Tim Duncan blocked Kobe’s lay-up, which led to a LaMarcus Aldridge dunk that put the Spurs up eight. The Spurs would hold on because we all know how the Lakers are.

On a side note, this was the last time Kobe and Duncan faced each other in an NBA game. Maybe they’ll play each other in an NBA-sponsored game, a random rec league, or Mario Kart.

BEHIND THE LINES
Tim Duncan (SA): 12 pts, 13 rebs.
Tony Parker (SA): 25 pts, 6 assts.
Kobe Bryant (LAL): 25 pts.
Julius Randle (LAL): 11 pts, 15 rebs.
Jordan Clarkson (LAL): 20 pts, 6 assts.
Lou Williams (LAL): 21 pts.
