The Hangover: Klay Thompson Scores a Cool 60 Against the Pacers

This is the Hangover. This is where I get drunk on the NBA as I recap last night’s action as well as a few things going on around the league. Here’s your word vomit.

SIXTY POINTS

So this NBA season has been really fun. Russell Westbrook got a triple-double for the sixth straight game. Point guard James Harden has been trememdous. Joel Embiid is one of a kind. Karl-Anthony Towns continues to work towards becoming the man. So is Anthony Davis. The Clippers seem really good. The baby Lakers are super fun to watch and to root for. There is so much going on in this league.

And then there’s a 60-point scorer in the Warriors this season. No, it’s not who you think. Well, maybe it is. But Klay Thompson, who is usually Option #3 in the Warriors, scored 60 in three quarters. That’s wild, right?

Remember that Kobe Bryant scored 62 in three quarters. In fact, let’s go back, oh, 30 years to see how many times 60 points was scored IN A GAME, period. Click on the pic to see a larger version of the old jaypeg.

Only 20 times (including Klay’s, which is not included here) in the last 30 years. It’s really rare. But Klay did it. In three quarters.

While we know how amazing Stephen Curry is when it comes to scoring streaks, Klay’s seem a little more volcanic when he DOES get on that roll. After all, this is the same guy that scored 37 points in one quarter (happened two seasons ago). He probably could’ve gotten 80 (or even, dare I say, 82) if they weren’t whoopin’ the Pacers so badly.

I feel like we’ll see something like this again before the season is over. I mean, come on. Look at Russ rack up those triple-doubles.

THE REST OF THE LEAGUE

Yeah. Westbrook has 11 triple-doubles this season. Out of 22. The record for most triple-doubles in a season is Oscar Robertson with 41. So, yeah, he’s definitely on pace. Did I mention that he got his sixth straight? And that the record is Wilt Chamberlain with nine straight? Okay.

Luke Walton is really committed to his bench. He started Metta World Peace at, I guess, shooting guard because Brandon Ingram is playing the point. It’s okay to start either Jordan Clarkson and Lou Williams; the Lakers never start off well and it’s partly because their best scorers are all coming off the bench. And we mentioned Lou; he scored 38 points against the Jazz after scoring 40 against Memphis.

In the meantime, way to go, Igor Kokoskov for filling in for ill Jazz coach Quin Snyder.

Oh, yeah. The Thunder beat the Hawks. That’s 10 losses out of 11 games now, ATL. Sad.

Marc Gasol also got a triple-double himself. And by the way, Troy Daniels scored 29 points against the Pelicans, after scoring 31 against the Lakers. He is ballin’.

Yikes. Al Horford missed a point blank lay-up that could’ve won it. James Harden had another monster game with 37-8-8.

Toronto just can’t get over the hump against Cleveland. That’s the third straight time the Cavs have won their match-up against the dinos this season. Ouch.

What’s going on, Bulls? Also, Blazers have now won four of five.

The San Antonio Spurs are still undefeated on the road. 12-0. The record for best road start? Last year’s Warriors won their first 14 games, losing their 15th road game, ironically, to the team the Spurs just beat, the Bucks. Best road win streak ever? The 1972 Lakers won 16 straight away from Los Angeles. So that’s yet another record we have to watch out for.

LINE CROSSER

You can’t beat Klay’s 60 points. You just can’t. Here. Watch a video of his expertise in putting balls through hoops.

In the meantime, Klay’s teammates (two-time MVP Stephen Curry, 2014 MVP Kevin Durant, and wannabee Chuck Norris Sidekicks MVP Draymond Green) had some fun out on the court as well as they executed a fanciful fastbreak. Green threw a better deep ball better than any quarterback from the Niners this season, Curry threw TNLP high, then Durant caught the ball with his 25-foot wingspan. Fantastic.

Those poor Pacers.
