Spurs guard T.J. Ford has decided to retire at the age of 28. He mentioned it via Twitter earlier today.
He suffered a stinger last Wednesday against New York, his latest of his neck/spine injuries. Ford suffered a spinal injury after a hard fall halfway through his rookie season with Milwaukee in 2003-04. That led him to sit out the entire 2004-05 season. After that, he went through his career receiving a series of neck/spine injuries. After last Wednesday, he decided to make the difficult decision to retire. These injuries are no joke as they could lead to paralysis.
T.J. was part of the celebrated 2003 NBA Draft Class. He was drafted 8th by the Bucks. After a three-year stint with the Bucks (including the one season he sat out entirely), he played for the Raptors and the Pacers (where he averaged a career high 14.9 points per game) before becoming the back-up for Tony Parker in San Antonio. It's sad that he's not able to play any longer and we'll all wonder on what could have been had he not suffered that injury in his rookie year.
But at least, he was able to retire from the game without suffering a catastrophic injury. While it may not be under his terms, better now than later when it could've been potentially worse.
We wish you luck the rest of the way, Mr. Ford.
