We Like Obscure NBA Players: Mike Penberthy

We were watching a Laker game that one time back in 2001

REY-REY: “Man. Who is this guy?”
FRIEND: “I don’t know. But he went to… THE MASTERS.”
FRIEND 2: “I don’t know where THE MASTERS is but it sounds cool!”

We found out later that The Masters College is in Santa Clarita, CA. About a good half-hour away from L.A.

Who went to The Masters?

Mike Penberthy.

Penberthy only played two seasons. Well, he only played three games in his second season. Nevertheless, he played for the World Champion L.A. Lakers. He just came out of nowhere, really. He played in the 2001 and 2002 seasons. I don’t really remember his game other than him being the designated three-point shooter off the bench. And he got some burn because Derek Fisher was hurt at the time. When Fisher came back, he was left off the playoff roster. He averaged 5.0 PPG that season.

He may have only played those two seasons in the NBA… but he also has a ring (was waived in November 2001)! The Lakers were champs in the only years he played. He’s got more rings than Karl Malone, John Stockton, Reggie Miller, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, and Allen Iverson!

Penberthy went on to play in Europe after his short NBA career. I don’t know much about his career there but I guess he’s doing well.

I mean, he’s got his own YouTube mix! Thanks, Illastrate!
